Art Deco District

South Beach = Art Deco

The Art Deco style of visual arts, architecture, and design first appeared in 1925 and became a major style in the 1930s. Thanks to the colossal efforts of Barbara Baer Capitman in the 1970's, the Art Deco District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Most condominiums in the Art Deco District DO NOT HAVE parking

The City of Miami Beach allows short-term rentals in the Art Deco District.  However, not every condominium allows them

Boundaries: from 5th Street to 15th Street, between Ocean Drive and Collins Court.

The Beach

The beach will always be the main reason for tourism in South Beach. Stretching 2.2 miles from South Pointe to 15th Street, its white sands are occasionally replenished, due to erosion

There is 1 colorful lifeguard post per street, each one in a different style

Joggers and walkers tend to run on the compact side of the sand, next to the dunes. Beach umbrellas and lounge chairs are available for rent and stationary food trailers sell snacks and beverages

Lummus Park

Lummus Park is on the east side of Ocean Drive

Many annual events take place on the Hard Pack (the "hard" sand area that sits right in between Lummus Park and the beach) but you can also play beach volleyball and work out at the Muscle Beach outdoor gym. Home to the Art Deco Welcome Center, its outdoor clock with the current time and date is a favorite photo op

For those who enjoy long promenades, the Miami Beach Boardwalk starts as a paved path at the Miami Beach Marina, borders South Pointe Park, crosses through Lummus Park and then becomes a boardwalk from 21st Street to 46th Street

Ocean Drive

Ocean Drive is probably the most transited street in South Beach. Its Art Deco hotels are immediately recognized around the world

The infamous chainsaw scene of the movie "Scarface" was filmed here when South Beach was considered a retirement community. Then the 1980s TV show "Miami Vice" put South Beach in the spotlight and the rest is history

Predominantly pedestrian since 2020, tourists of all ages enjoy the many options for outdoor dining and live music that Ocean Drive offers

Collins Avenue

On Collins Avenue you find more examples of Art Deco hotels plus retail stores, restaurants, and condominiums

Collins Avenue is extremely busy, specially during annual events.  Vehicles and crowds (sometimes with loud music) transit the streets until the early hours of the morning

Parking is very limited and the search for a vacant meter spot creates traffic congestion. To address this problem, the City of Miami Beach offers a lower-cost parking alternative at municipal parking garages and lots
